PRESIDENT'S COMMUNICATION
Now that the election is over, we’re closing in on the final six weeks of the semester.  In case you didn’t know, our library now has 12 laptop computers with appropriate software programs available for student checkout.  I’ve been told 11 of the 12 are usually checked out, and students have been very responsible about returning them on time.  In addition, 12 wireless laptops are now available for use within the library.  This comes at a critical time in the semester and should provide students with limited resources greater access to computer equipment.  The wireless computers in the library will also provide for overflow from the Academic Support Center during peak times in the semester.  Special thanks to Linda Nielsen, Thom Neith, Jan Dellinger, and Sharon Buss for spearheading the program and working out the details to make it possible.  Additionally, I want to thank library staff members Vicki Cutsforth, Peggy Lane, Judy Mitchell, and Christine Shreve for going the extra mile to support these services.

My Hawkeye Heroes this week are the people who have been hosting the Focus on Friday visits.  Organizers and presenters Holly Grimm, Dave Ball, Jason Streed, Nadia Woodward, Rhonda McRina, Judi Neuverth, Quentin Hart, Tom Hogan, and Wendy Mohlis have worked to make these days a great recruiting tool.  I also appreciate the assistance of program representatives and student volunteers to make the visit days complete.  The number of participants has increased steadily since the program’s inception last year.  The three remaining Focus on Fridays for this semester are November 12, November 19, and December 10.  I also want to thank everyone who has been wearing their Hawkeye polo shirts and greeting potential students during their visit to Hawkeye.  Students choose a college for a variety of reasons – and friendliness of faculty and staff ranks near the top!

Have a great weekend – enjoy the absence of all the campaign ads.
-- Dr. Bettsey L. Barhorst, President

VETERANS' DAY CELEBRATION
On Thursday, November 11, Hawkeye Community College will be observing Veterans Day to honor our Veterans (students, staff and family).

At 12:15 p.m. a ceremony will be held at the Flagpole site outside of Hawkeye Center.  Representatives from the different branches of the Military will participate as well as members of Rolling Thunder and the Amvets Honor Guard.  As part of the ceremony, the Student Senate will also be dedicating a plaque to be placed at the tree that was given in honor of those who have served during Enduring Freedom/ Iraqi Freedom.  This is the same tree that was decorated with yellow ribbons and displayed in Hawkeye Center at the beginning of the conflict in Iraq.

The Student Senate will give Veterans a gift of a voucher for a free lunch.  Several displays will be included in the celebration including a Wall of Honor display, flag display, photo display of Hawkeye Veterans (student and staff), and varying displays by the representatives of the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.

Tonic Sol-Fa Kicks off HCC Artist Series on November 11

Tonic Sol-Fa will kick off the Hawkeye Community College Artist Series on Thursday, November 11, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  This group is a dynamic vocal quartet that has recently been described by the "New York Times" as "a vocal kaleidoscope of sounds unique to the human voice...."  Their a cappella show is full of energy, humor, and audience participation that appeals to people of all ages.  They perform every kind of music ranging from hit country and pop songs to rhythm and blues and award-winning originals. Tonic Sol-Fa prides themselves on their versatility.  HCC students will be admitted free to this event, which will take place on the college’s main campus at 1501 E. Orange Road in Waterloo, in Tama Hall.

On Thursday, February 24, a performance will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. featuring “Forever Plaid.”  This hilarious musical will put a smile on your face, a tap in your toes, and a tune in your heart.  Forever Plaid is the story of four unlikely heroes whose dreams of musical glory come true when they miraculously return to earth.  Snuffed out during a collision with a school bus, these nerdy crooners with angelic voices come back to do the show they never got to do in life.  Popular songs such as "Catch a Falling Star", "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", "Three Coins in a Fountain" are featured!  This performance is presented by Des Moines Playhouse and Iowa Touring Theatre Company. The performance was written by Stuart Ross, with Musical Arrangement by James Raitt.  This performance will be the season finale for the Artist Series.  HCC students will be admitted free to this event.

The Hawkeye Community College Artist Series provides the community with a rich variety of arts and culture entertainment for all ages.  Tickets are $5.  Free and convenient parking is available.  Tickets for Artist Series performances can be ordered by calling Registration at ext. 1520 or Barb Roeder at ext. 1279.

HCC Offers Choir Credit Class for Spring Semester
Students may begin registering for choir class for Spring Semester at Hawkeye Community College.  Hawkeye began the applied voice/choir class for credit this year.  Choir class is open to all who enjoy singing and sharing their talents.

The Hawkeye Choir performs in concert at the college and in the public.  In addition, the Choir will perform at each graduation.  A tour for the choir is being discussed for Spring Break 2005-2006.  Choir rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 – 5:20 p.m.  The wide varieties of music selections will appeal to any choral singer.  Students scheduled for course MU110T – Applied Music may receive one credit per semester through four semesters.

Two upcoming performances are scheduled.  The first will be the Choir Concert, which will be held on Tuesday, December 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Tama Hall.  The second is Hawkeye Community College’s Graduation on December 16.

The Choir director is Shannon McGuire.  McGuire has taught in Minnesota, Texas, and Iowa.  She earned her Bachelor’s of Music in Education from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has attended Hamlin University, in St. Paul, Minnesota, for continued graduate work.  Choirs under McGuire’s direction have received Sweepstakes and Superior choral ratings.  McGuire is a dedicated and inspiring music educator.  She is full of enthusiasm for Hawkeye making a commitment to offer choir for course credit.  McGuire is no stranger to Iowa, as she grew up in the Cedar Valley.  She also teaches music in the Waterloo Public Schools, sings in the Metropolitan Chorale and studies private voice at UNI.

Calling for Cell Phones
Some of my Introduction to Women’s Studies students are doing an activism project that involves fundraising for the Family Service League, which provides services to victims of domestic abuse.  One of their fundraisers involves collecting old (even non-working) cell phones.  In some cases the phones are given to victims to use in emergencies, but they can also turn them in and get money for them.  If you have an old cell phone that you’d like to donate to the cause, please send it to Karla Brown in the Library building.  Thank you.

A WORD FROM the INFORMATION Technology DEPARTMENT
The IT department has received a large volume of calls regarding the procedure for transferring calls. There are two methodologies for this….

1.)
A standard transfer – The phones LED display has the option of “Transf.” When transferring a call simply push that button – dial the extension of the person you are transferring a call to – and then press transfer again.

2.)     Transferring directly to voice mail - Again, utilize the “Transf” button first, but then press the * (asterisk) key on the phones number pad. To complete the transfer dial the extension of the person you are transferring to – and then press transfer again.

We have also discovered that some are having difficulty reaching the “Helpdesk” from off campus. To do this, call Hawkeye directly at 296-2320 and subsequently dial 1415.

@The Library
WIRELESS LAPTOPS
The Library has always promoted that you can use the Library in your office. Now we want you to know that you can use your “desk” at the Library.  Twelve wireless laptop computers are available for students, faculty, and staff to use anywhere in the library. These twelve are in addition to the 22 PCs in the library.  (There are also twelve laptops available to students to check out for home use.)

The new wireless laptops may be checked out from the circulation desk for use in the library for up to two hours.  The Internet, online databases and electronic books, printing, and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and Publisher are available from the wireless laptops. Files may be burned to your own CD, or saved to a network drive or a USB drive (also known as “pen drive,” “flash drive,” or “JumpDrive.”)

A big “Thank you” goes to Information Services for providing students, faculty, and staff with wireless access on the Hawkeye campus.
